A juvenile can be incarcerated temporarily in a juvenile detention facility for a variety of reasons. These include the seriousness of the offense, the juvenile’s prior history, the likelihood that the juvenile will commit other offenses, the need to compel the juvenile’s court appearance, and the safety of the juvenile or the community. After being taken into custody, the juvenile has the right to be arraigned (be brought before the court and have the charges read) on the next available court date. If remanded to detention the juvenile has the right to appear before the court to ask for release every two weeks.
